Most residential property insurance policies cover a range of different events, such as a fire, flood, escape of water, storm, subsidence, malicious damage and theft.
There are three different types of residential property insurance – buildings insurance, contents insurance and combined insurance.
Buildings Insurance
Buildings insurance covers the structural elements of the property and its permanent fittings, such as the roof, walls, outbuildings and fitted kitchens and bathrooms.
It typically covers damage caused by flooding, subsidence, falling trees, fires, storms, vandalism and theft. Depending on the policy, it can also cover for alternative accommodation if you are unable to live in your house following an insured event.
Buildings insurance is required as a condition of your mortgage.
Contents Insurance
Contents Insurance covers the belongings that are inside your property. These policies typically cover items such as furniture, electricals and jewellery against events such as fire, floods and theft.
Often, contents insurance will also cover accidental damage or any items that you can take outside of the home, such as mobile phones and bikes. These are usually optional extras so it is worth checking over any policy before taking one out if this is something that you want to have.
Combined Insurance
Combined policies cover both the structural elements of your property, and the contents within it.
Many people decide to go with a combined insurance policy as it can be a more cost-effective and convenient way of insuring belongings.
